RSA Statement on Board Chair V. Manuel Perez Proposal
The election of the Sheriff for each County in California is enshrined in the California Constitution. This ensures the Sheriff is directly accountable to the voters, not to the Board of Supervisors. Board Chair V. Manuel Perez's proposal to place oversight of the Sheriff under county administration would undermine this constitutional structure and erode the independence that voters expect from their elected sheriff. RSA strongly opposes this proposal and will continue to advocate for the integrity of the elected sheriff model.
