Deputy Bruce Lee was laid to rest May 19 in a public ceremony that drew more than a thousand. Lee, 45, was killed on May 13 while answering a domestic violence call. About 1,500 people gathered in and around St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in La Quinta for the service. "We can never repay the debt," California Attorney General Bill Lockyer said, speaking at the funeral. Speakers also included Riverside County Sheriff Bob Doyle and Sheriff's Department Indio Station Captain John Horton. Lee was a department veteran, having served since 1980. Hundreds of uniformed officers, both colleagues who had worked with Lee as well as peace officers from far away, saluted as the flag-draped coffin passed before them. The graveside ceremony at Coachella Valley Cemetery was marked by a 21-gun salute and the solemn strains of taps played by three trumpeters, followed by "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes. With tears, Lee's widow Patricia accepted the folded American flag. Lee's death has created an outpouring of public sympathy, with donations for the family coming in and messages of condolence. Jay Leno even commented publicly on the tragedy, pledging his support to the Lee family. The funeral procession from the church to the graveside was often lined with residents holding signs and flags honoring Bruce.
